The American HealthCare family morns the loss of one of its own. A memorial service for Jim Haines will be held at Oakey’s South on Friday, June 12th.

On Sunday, June 2nd, 2024, the American HealthCare family experienced a tremendous loss. Jim Haines, our General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, passed away unexpectedly. Jim had been a part of our family since 1992 and was respected by all.

Jim had received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Washington & Lee University and a Juris Doctor degree from Western New England University School of Law. Jim was Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC), Certified in HealthCare Privacy Compliance (CHPC), Certified in Healthcare Research Compliance (CHRC), was a  Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP), and a Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional – International (CCEP-I). Jim was licensed to practice law in Virginia and Connecticut and was a member of the American Bar Association, the Virginia Bar Association, the Connecticut Bar Association, the American Health Lawyers Association and the Health Care Compliance Association.

Jim was past President of the Board of Directors of Roanoke Area Ministries, Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the University of Science and Philosophy, and past President of the Board of Directors of the FREE Foundation. Jim worked for the Travelers Insurance Company in the Managed Care and Employee Benefits Operations Department in Richmond, Virginia; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and Hartford, Connecticut before joining American HealthCare in 1992.

The side of Jim that was maybe his greatest strength is illustrated by the comments below:

“ From the beginning, working with Jim was a unique experience. Our work together began with question/discussion sessions to explore how we each approached our work. Over the years, the multiple questions became one: how are you doing? - shorthand for ‘What issues do you see,’ ‘Are there any fires,’ or ‘What do you need to succeed right now.’ And he wanted honest answers- even if Jim was frazzled and knee-deep in something, he was accessible and supportive. He wanted everyone on the team to love their work because he did.

Several years ago, when I selfishly realized he might want to retire soon, Jim assured me he had no immediate plans for that. That day, and many days after, he proudly stated, “I can’t imagine retiring, I love coming to work, and I have the best team ever. “

Jim was many things- thoughtful, respectful, observant, empathetic, committed. He had the best qualities of any coworker, mentor, and friend. Because of Jim, I loved coming to work and the wonderful team he developed. “  - Jea Brown

“Jim Haines was a supportive and dedicated boss and mentor. Every day he worked to make sure American HealthCare, our facilities, and his staff had the tools and resources we needed to thrive and excel. He made each of us feel valued by working through any issues and following up to see if we needed more assistance from him. It was evident that he cared for his team and found joy in our successes, both personal and professional. His door was always open, and his calm, attentive nature made everyone feel comfortable seeking his guidance. Working for Jim was an immense privilege, and he will be dearly missed.” – Cassandra Gallant

“Jim and I met in 2019, and in those five short years, he made such a positive impact on my life that I struggle to put it into words. I began as an HR intern, and during that time I assisted him with a few Compliance projects. Fresh out of college and unsure of which professional direction to take, Jim offered me a job as Compliance Administrative Assistant. I had no legal/compliance background and wondered what he saw that compelled him to give me this opportunity. Jim and the amazing team he built taught me everything from the ground up, and I am so thankful for the education and confidence that Jim instilled in me. He was a mentor, a confidant, and an all-around wonderful person who I will miss dearly.” – Holly Garrett

“ It has been an honor and privilege to  work with Jim Haines these past 28 years.  Jim was a soft-spoken man liked by everyone that he met.  Jim loved his job and his family.  In many ways American HealthCare was his family.  Jim also loved knowledge.  Those of you who received e-mails for Jim may have noted the abbreviations after his name.  Each of those abbreviations represents a certification in health care compliance.  Each signifies an investment in time and study.  Jim had his Certified Health Compliance (CHC), Certified Compliance Health Care Professional (CCEP), Certified Compliance Health Care Professional-International (CCEP-I), Certified Health Privacy Compliance (CHCP), Certified Healthcare Research Compliance (CHRC).  In addition to his achievements in health care compliance Jim was also admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court an accomplishment few attorneys ever achieve.  Jim was just a decent person; I will miss him as I am sure all of you will. “ - Dean Cranwell

A memorial service for Jim will be held at Oakey’s South at 4257 Brambleton Ave. in Roanoke of Friday, June 12th at 10 am.
